New GST Slabs in India — GST 2.0 (Effective 22 Sept 2025)

India's GST Council introduced major reforms in September 2025, simplifying the slab structure. The old slabs of 12% and 28% have been removed. The new system has four slabs: 0% for essential items like dairy, lifesaving medicines and educational materials; 5% for daily essentials, packaged foods, FMCG and toiletries; 18% for most goods and services including electronics, appliances, cement and vehicles; and a new 40% slab for luxury and sin goods like tobacco, pan masala and aerated sugary drinks.

This is the biggest GST reform since 2017, aimed at reducing household expenses and simplifying business compliance.

CGST vs SGST vs IGST — What's the Difference?

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) apply equally when a transaction occurs within the same state — each is exactly half the total GST rate. IGST (Integrated GST) applies on inter-state transactions and equals the full GST rate, collected by the Central Government and later distributed.
